Building a computer with Adam & Mike
January 7, 2002

After finally receiving all of the parts we ordered from NewEgg.com, Char decided it was time for Adam to build a computer system. Adam's friend, Mike, came over, and under Char's guidance they built the entire system. And, it booted first time (surprise)!

Congratulations to Adam & Mike!

After building the system, Char helped Adam & Mike build their first ethernet cable!

If you need a computer built, or a network wired in the Atlanta -
be sure to ask Adam & Mike. :^)

Whoa! Look at all of these parts. Mike began by putting the rails on the CD ROM/RW drives.

Adam unboxed the case (Enlight Mid-Tower) and brought it over to our impromptu workshop.

After taking the covers off, and removing the metal shielding -- Adam says it's ready for parts. :)

First, Adam assembles the 3.5" floppy drive, and hard disk drive (60 GB Maxtor).

Adam & Mike perform some magic, thinking it may help them figure out what to do next
(it didn't... :)

After properly grounding himself (to avoid static electricity), Adam (& Mike) screw the motherboard into the case.

Probably one of the most frustrating parts of building a computer - the WIRES (for the LEDs & Power)! After a hint from Char, Adam & Mike decide it is probably best to read the manual to figure out where the wires go!

"Look! We put a video card in! Aren't we cool?", Mike & Adam comment.

Check this out! The CD-ROM Drive and the CD-RW Drive fit in perfectly! These guys are awesome!

Adam connects the ribbon cables that go between the drives and the motherboard.

Confidently, Mike puts the case covers back on, and gets ready to give the system the SMOKE test... Smoke Test = Turning the computer on for the first time, and HOPING there is no smoke...

They passed!

Congratulations to Adam & Mike!

After building the system, Adam & Mike learned how to strip and properly wire their own ethernet cables! If you happen to talk to either of them, ask them what the color combination is for the wires.
HINT: It starts out with Orange White, Orange...

Bye bye!
